Baltic Index Records Weekly Decrease Amidst Rate Decline for Larger Vessels

The Baltic Exchange’s primary sea freight index fell on Friday, ending a six-week winning streak. The dip was influenced by lower rates for capesize and panamax vessel segments. The overall index, incorporating rates for capesize, panamax, and supramax vessels, dropped by about 2% to 2,196 points. This decline marks a 7.8% decrease for the week, halting six consecutive weekly gains.

Capesize vessels, renowned for transporting cargoes like iron ore and coal, witnessed a 3% drop, with average daily earnings decreasing by $877 to $28,875. Meanwhile, the panamax index experienced a 1.8% decrease, with average daily earnings falling by $315 to $19,483. Conversely, the supramax index rose by 4 points, marking its seventh straight week of gains.
